What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) to provide balance and vitality to the body through mindful exercise, and neuromuscular re-education. The Pilates principles address posture, muscle performance and motor control--the same concepts that form the basis of most orthopedic rehabilitation and therapy. Pilates offers strength and mobility training to improve posture, coordination and bio-mechanics.  Pilates synchronizes movement, breath and spring resistance to create a unique experience that will leave you feeling invigorated and elongated.

Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps build flexibility, long, lean muscles, and strength and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing to relieve stress and provide oxygen flow to muscles, developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ flexible system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises. No muscle group is under or over trained. Pilates  enhances core strength and brings increased reach, flexibility, sure-footedness and agility.  Pilates will lead you to a graceful sense of your body that comes from an engaged core, a fluid spine, and an expressive carriage of the body and limbs.
